World’s Largest Oil Field Found Off Scottish Coast

Sep 20, 2014

186285546The largest oil field in the world was discovered yesterday just 30 kilometers off Scotland’s coast.

As many Scots reeled from the defeat of their push for independence, the British government announced that the massive oil field has the potential to produce up to 15 million barrels a day, if not more, generating trillions of dollars annually for decades.

Located within Scotland’s territorial waters in the North Sea, near the coastal city of Aberdeen, the oil field measures about 560-by-80 km (348-by-50 miles), surpassing the second-largest, Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar Field, which produces 5 million barrels a day.

“To think we believed Scotland’s oil was running out, when there’s enough oil here to last hundreds and hundreds of years,” Jock Grant-Menzies of the British Treasury told BBC News. “I would hate to be in the Middle East right now. Whoever controls these Scottish oil fields controls the world.”

Scotland’s North Sea oil and gas reserves were a source of contention during the referendum on Scottish independence, with supporters and opponents disputing how much oil was left and if it could economically sustain an independent Scotland.

British Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the lucrative oil field’s discovery, noting it “will make London richer than Dubai.”

“England’s green and pleasant land will now be awash with oil,” he told news reporters outside his official residence at No. 10 Downing Street. “I can only thank God that the majority of Scottish voters chose to reject independence. Now, the oil money will remain here in Britain – well, more specifically London – where it belongs! I’ve already begun taking meetings with the world’s oil companies for drilling rights.”

When asked how much of the future oil revenue would go to Scotland, Cameron responded, “Whatever we choose to give them. I honestly don’t give a toss about those ungrateful twats. I’ll be PM for life thanks to this oil.”

Pro-independence leader Alex Salmond, who served as first minister and Scottish National Party leader until his resignation Friday, suffered a mild heart attack when he was informed about the oil field’s discovery and was quickly rushed to NHS Hospital Edinburgh, where he is recovering.

“I just wish we’d known about this a few days ago before the election,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. “The money from those 5 million barrels a day would have ensured a fairer, more equal, more successful Scotland, just what we wanted.”

Salmond reportedly suffered another heart attack after a BBC News reporter informed him the actual number was 15 million barrels a day.

I know this is satirical but many Scots are just not in a humorous mood right now!

  • Kachina Lively

England has a way of taking what does not belong to them but if the Scottish People truly do not wish Independence then all is well and England will benefit from the Scots, again..

  • Steve Bowers

ha ha ha ha ha , good one, I think we all need a laugh.

  • John Martin

    Proof Westminster can’t be trusted.

  • Celephais

Nah, we still have a sense of humour and we will bounce back stronger.

  • Duncan Fraser

Would be funny, if it wasn’t pretty much true!

  • gotsda .

First of all, this article is satirical.

Second, if it did so happen that this was a real article, why would Westminster have a say? Without creating a speculative conspiracy based on nothing but your own distrust of them, could you answer that one for me.

  • John Martin

Why wouldn’t they have a say?

  • gotsda .

    Jesus Christ.
You know who are exploring the North Sea for oil at this current moment, not the government but private companies.
So if they had discovered this enormous oil field it would be them announcing the find not the UK government.

It’s like, anything that could potentially go wrong you blame Westminster. They’re just a scapegoat to you people aren’t they.
What the markets are reacting badly to independence, well Westminster must be orchestrating it. Ridiculous.

im a resident of the shetland isles as I’m sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news but 1.5 trillion pounds worth of oil does exist west of shetland, this info was deliberately kept from the scottish people so they would vote to stay together

  • Schawminator

What is the source for this spoof? False Flag Networks

  • DMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Sir Dennis Healey admitted Westminster hid Scotland’s oil wealth from the people of Scotland in the 70’s and 80’s. They have been doing it for years. The McCrone report showed this too. The SNP got a hold of it through a FOI request in 2005 or thereabouts.

Of course it is private companies doing the exploring but they work closely with Government. They are in fact secretive even too government and play their cards very closely to their chests for commercial reasons.
The markets react badly at any change. For example they react the same way at elections. The Government and compliant press making a total meal of it and stating it meant certain disaster…well that was Westminster propaganda. If you don’t know that you don’t know much.

  • disqus_an29jYPkvn

This information has been available to all & sundry for some time. If people had the gumption to check for themselves instead of letting the television be their brain they would have known it. The Claire Ridge development is huge, & the British government was shitting themselves over the prospect of losing control of it.

  • Gavinder Alburino

It’s called the Clair Field. It was found in 1977. It’s been producing oil since 2005. The latest stage (Clair Ridge) started development 2 or 3 years ago and is due to start producing oil in 2016.

None of this is secret, it’s all been in the public domain for years. But let’s not let that get in the way of a good conspiracy theory.

Also, the Shetland Islands voted overwhelmingly to stay in the Union.

  • gotsda .

McCrone report was to do with the viability of an independent Scotland when factoring in oil revenue. Nothing to do with companies and the existence of oil fields.

So your reply was ignoring the fact that companies are in fact the ones who would be releasing this information as opposed to the government.

Markets react to a lot of things, but to act like the global reaction the the polls being at 51% yes is a Westminster conspiracy is laughable. A bit of puffery aside, there was signs of people preparing to take their assets out of Scotland. But no, there couldn’t be financial flight, that’s just fear mongering, business is bullying Scotland. Get real.

  • Jamel Warner

I bet they would have voted yes next time.

  • DMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Yes and the extent of the oil revenues were hidden from the public. They kept on telling us they were just about to run out etc. Just as they did this time. Now all of a sudden the newspapers are talking about the ‘new’ technology that is going to allow decades more oil production.
As for capital flight etc. of course the markets get jittery whenever this kind of thing happens. This happens in UK general elections etc as well. The difference is the press don’t go absolutely batshit over it and try and suggest it means the end of everything as we know it. As happens in these situations some would get the jitters and leave but a lot would see opportunities.
The Uk Government were caught pushing business into coming out and making statements. Sir Ian Wood contradicted his own statements though he was not backed up by Prof Alex Kemp and Oil and Gas UK who had worked with him on his figures. Only the terminally blinkered and or dim cannot see the UK establishment called in a lot of favours. There was also a lot of misrepresentation of what businesses had actually said. This was most definitely scaremongering.
Besides it doesn’t matter. We lost this battle but there is no way out for the UK parties now. We might even be better off in the long run. We now have the measure of the UK Government and press like never before. As the FT points out in this article the UK is all but finished now anyway. You have had a short reprieve that is all.
“The one certainty about the outcome was that any close result was a bad
result. It is. Those who argued in 1997 that devolution was a slippery
slope were right. Last week, Scottish nationalists lost a battle. But
the outcome makes it very likely they have won their war.”

  • gotsda .

Right, so we have established that the government isn’t the one who gives press release on oil discoveries.

Now all of a sudden the newspapers are talking about the ‘new’ technology that is going to allow decades more oil production.

This is noteable, however potential new technologies is different to actually getting decades of extended life on the oil fields.
However, if it is the choice of companies to not announce anything because it is in there interest, why is that Westminsters fault? For instance, the UK government could better subsidies these nations because it is a larger nation.

“The difference is the press don’t go absolutely batshit over it and try and suggest it means the end of everything as we know it. ”

That’s because the scale was different, for instance when was the last election whereby large banks were preparing to move away?

“As happens in these situations some would get the jitters and leave but a lot would see opportunities.”
Doubtful, people don’t invest money on uncertainty, and that is pretty much all the Yes vote offered. Maybe in a few years when things had settled down a bit investment would pick up, but not on sane investor would want to put their money somewhere with such an uncertain future.

Oh sure, the government called in favours, but I think you’ll have to provide more evidence to show they were being told what to say.
They pushed them to say something, but it’s likely that they didn’t want to get involved in such a partisan debate.

Don’t have a subscription so I can’t read the article. However, I would add a level of doubt to this for a few reasons:
The SNP exploited people who are suffering a financial crisis to sell their message. Hope is always better than the harsh reality we live in as a message to sell.
This can be seen to happen time and time again in History, desperate people will vote for anyone who promises to magic their problems away. When real wages start to improve, and prices begin to fall people will forget about independence. Plus, if it is the case that oil doesn’t last all that long, there wouldn’t be any potential financial benefit to independence.

  • DMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Plus are you for real? Can you not see that the Uk, whatever Government there will be, is now beingforced towards federalism?? Surley you can see that. Salmond won this a long time ago. It is just a matter of time.
Not only Scotland but now England wants its devomax/independence. The ball has been set rolling. There is no way out. The UK is altered forever. Ther is no magical middle calss utopia of happy contented little low wage slaves anymore. the wages got too low and now no one can afford anything. The deficit is getting larger and the housing bubble is going to go pop. The UK parties are fighting amongst themselves and the break up of the Uk is going to be the only outcome.

  • gotsda .

“Plus are you for real? Can you not see that the Uk, whatever Government there will be, is now beingforced towards federalism??”

Oh I totally agree that is what is now on the cards, notice I couldn’t read the article. Does that mean an independent Scotland is inevitable? No.

    “wage slaves”

By this do you mean people who work for a wage, how is this slavery? They have a choice to work or not, and they have a choice to deal with the consequences of their actions. Low paid workers. Not slaves.

“the wages got too low and now no one can afford anything”
Caused by the global recession, due to the high unemployment meaning a large reduction in demand for labour and a large surplus of labour, reduced competition allow for low wages.
Increasing employment will increase wages as there will be greater competition between employers for labor.

    “The deficit is getting larger”
Actually the deficit is shrinking, we’ll be running a 0.4% surplus in 2018 if the economy keeps on track. If you’re talking about the debt, which is different to the deficit then yes that will be increasing until we have a nil deficit. At which point unless our GDP takes too big a hit, we’re laughing.

“the housing bubble is going to go pop.”
It could, however due to people being acutely aware of this issue due to what occurred in 2008, I think it could be averted. Personally, if I was in power I stop guaranteeing mortgages. Then those who gave them out would be more careful who they give them to.
Either way, we should wait and see, the only place were rampant speculation is occurring is in London, and those who will suffer the most will be those who are speculating, and not those who actually live in the houses.

“The UK parties are fighting amongst themselves and the break up of the Uk is going to be the only outcome.”

Doubtful, as the economy gets healthier, which is a process already underway things will settle down.
Political parties always fight amongst themselves, it’s natural. We’re just observing change, change forced by the democratic process.
Also, it’s strange how you make out the UK’s finances are in a terrible position, when they are actually looking far better than most of the developed world, while trying to downplay any issues an independent Scotland could of had.

The largest European oilfields ARE in Scotland and Scotland DOES have the potential to become the Qatar of Europe, hence the vote was rigged: http://www.sott.net/article/286355-Special-Report-Scottish-Referendum-Rigged-The-How-and-the-Why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM0JsBjcx2E
